*Who are the Architects and Contractor? We’ve selected the architect firm. The school wouldn’t have the ability to just enact new taxes or issue additional bonds. That’d be disappointing but it wouldn’t be a crisis. For example, we might have to add fewer new classrooms, or reduce square footage in the library or lobby, etc. If those bids come in higher than what the architects have estimated and told us to expect, we’d just have to scale back some parts of the project to make it fit within the amount we’ve got to spend. The way it would work is that the school will get bids up front. The school could not increase the tax rate or issue additional bonds unless there was another election and voters separately approved it (and nobody is assuming that would be an option). We could not issue more bonds than what we’ve asked for in the bond election. The bottom line here is that the amount of bonds that will be issued is fixed at the $8.9 million figure you’ve seen. *What if building costs turn out to be higher than expected? I know this is a big concern for people, and I understand that. *Interest Rates: We can’t lock rates in until after the vote and when the bonds are actually sold, but our bond advisor has told us that current rates for this kind of financing are around 2%. That was a very conservative estimate we were given last year, but fortunately so far interest rates have held steady, better than expected). Our bond advisor has told us that, assuming current interest rates hold on until after the election, the amount available for construction will be around $7.6 million (you may have heard a lower figure of about $6.65 million.

You may have seen some official disclosures about the bonds showing a figure of $8.9 million, but that number includes interest. *Overall Cost: We’re working with an estimated project cost of $7.6 million. How Many Kids Will Benefit? If Vian stays roughly the same size it is now, around 3,000 kids will each spend four years in this high school over the next 40 to 50 years. The 4-room 1990’s annex on the southeast corner will not be torn down, but all the English classes currently held there should move to the new building. The lot will become green space or parking. We looked at the idea of renovating or repairing it, but for several reasons the costs made that impractical. *The Old Building: Our High School building was built in 1955 and it’s older by far than most area schools. We’ve emphasized that we want a building Vian can be proud of for generations to come. They’ll show the proposed floor plan and the planned appearance of the front of the building, though none of that can be completely finalized until all the bids are in later this year. *Do we have Blueprints? We’ve asked the architects to get us good preliminary drawings out at least two weeks before the vote. Band and chorus will also stay where they are in the cafetorium building. None of this project is for athletics programs: No locker rooms no gym or sports fields no sports equipment.

*No Athletic Facilities: Nobody is a bigger supporter of Wolverine sports programs than I am, but our budget is obviously limited and our biggest need is clear. (To be clear: It is not moving north of town to the softball park this is on the current campus.) We’ve circulated a map on Facebook and in last week’s newspaper. The new building will face US-SH 82, and sit between Vian Pharmacy and the east end of our football stadium. The whole thing should be about 26,000 square feet.

*The New Building: The new building should have at least 16 classrooms, plus a modern library (media center), High School offices, and some common/lobby area. I’m speaking on my own behalf here so I can say that I personally hope very much that you’ll vote “Yes.” I’ve been getting a lot of good questions, so let me try to clarify several things and answer some common questions as best I can: Vian Public Schools is attempting to build a new High School building, which will require a public vote. “As many of you know, I am the current President of the Vian School Board. Editor’s note: Vian School Board President Joe Paul Simon released the following statement to the voters of the Vian School District regarding the proposed new High School building and library, that goes to a vote on Feb.
